Burkhart Arrested On Suspicion Of Arson

Local law enforcement officials in Los Angeles have arrested a man they believe to be responsible for a series of car fires that occurred over this past weekend. Harry Burkhart, a German national living in Hollywood, was arrested at approximately 3 o'clock Monday morning by a Los Angeles County reserve Sheriff's Deputy near Sunset Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue in West Hollywood. Burkhart, who is just 24 years old, is suspected of starting 52 car fires from last Thursday night to Sunday night throughout the Hollywood, West Hollywood, Studio City, Sherman Oaks and North Hollywood areas. While no deaths or serious injuries resulted from the fires, the flames damaged several carports and apartment buildings and resulted in as much as $3 million in damages. Local law enforcement agents were able to capture Burkhart after surveillance video was released of him leaving a parking structure in which a car had been set ablaze. The grainy video showed a tall, heavy-set man with a receding hairline and shoulder-length hair pulled back into a ponytail. Information from a combined federal and local law enforcement group, the Joint Arson Task Force, revealed that Burkhart drove a dark Dodge van with Canadian license plates. Reserve sheriff's deputy Shervin Lalezary spotted the vehicle early Monday morning and pulled Burkhart over before arresting him. Burkhart is being held without bail and is expected to appear in court again this Wednesday.
