Ex-Assembly Speaker's Son Charged With Violent CrimePosted on: December 3, 2008 at 10:30 a.m.Violent crimes affect communities, families and the individuals involved. Los Angeles violent crime defense attorneys regularly have to counsel entire families through a trial or court proceeding, because the consequences and public outcry can be serious. Violent criminal offenders are treated harshly, and in California, some violent crimes will carry the death penalty. Violent crimes are also counted as strikes under California's Three Strikes penalties. With all this being the case, one would think that popular figures in California and Los Angeles would keep themselves and their families clear of committing or being involved with violent crimes, such as murder, assault, manslaughter, etc. This is not always the case however. This case touches really close to home because the victim who was killed was my cousins best friend and i've known him since i was a child. Trying to put my emotions aside, when we found out one of the suspects had political ties, i was really worried. I know that being a politician does not get you off the hook for everything, but my uncle is a measly commissioner of San Francisco and ive seen how politics can shape punishments. Me, my family, and especially Luis' (the victim) family are really hoping that the Nunez family gets not special treatment. I've been watching the news interviews and the information the prosecution is stating is true and the counter-arguments from the defense lawyers makes me worried. I know the guys who were there, and they are and were never armed, so self defense is such a weak argument, however, because of the political ties, it makes me worried it may be effective. The jury trial system will hopefully prevail and hinder the possibility of Nunez getting off the hook for his fathers political affiliation. If a judge were making the case, the possibility of him being bribed is much stronger as Nunez has connections throughout the entire state, and im sure the country as well. When we found out 'they found them' we were all content and excited that the people would pay for the devastation they caused, however, when we found out that 'he is an assembly mans son', our content dissipated as we knew there would be hardships. I really hope that justice will prevail in this situation and the people will pay for their irrational actions. Although it will not every bring Luis back, it will and can set a precedent of no tolerance. A life lost is a life lost, regardless who your father is. The political entanglement in this case is blatant, and there is a good chance that the former State Assembly Speaker will try to use all of his high-up connections within the system to get his son off. Without a jury it would be more likely that the political pressures on judges and other officials to help out one of their own would dictate the outcome of the trial. However, since jury members for the most part are not reliant on people in the system to keep their jobs, they are more capable of making unbiased and accurate decisions. Erik R. It will be interesting to see how this publicity will affect the people involved in the decision making. There are four suspects and I believe jurors in the case will be looking to find the primary killer, and not penalize all of them entirely. In this case I believe the jurors would sympathize with Fabian Nunez' son and try wholeheartedly to believe he didn Kestenbaum Eisner & Gorin LLP has been recognized as one of the best U.S. law firms, based on the experience, professionalism, and ethics of its criminal defense lawyers and attorneys.
