Roy Charged With Attempted ExtortionPosted on: December 18, 2011 at 12:02 a.m.Film director Duncan Roy was arrested in mid-November by Los Angeles police on charges of felony attempted extortion. It is unclear who Roy attempted to extort, or what, exactly, his demands were. Roy was arrested and held on an immigration hold in Van Nuys since he is not an American citizen and was born in England. Being held on an immigration hold is standard practice for non-American citizens who have been accused of a felony criminal offense. Roy appeared in a Los Angeles court just eight days later and pleaded not guilty. Roy's bail was set at $35,000 and the director remains in police custody. Roy directed the 2002 independent film "AKA," and was also featured on the 2009 season of "Sex Rehab with Dr. Drew" where he was treated for a sex addiction and shared stories of the severe physical and sexual abuse he had suffered as a child. We can explain to you that extortion is defined as the use of threat to obtain goods or services from another person. Those threats can include physical violence (including the threat of physical violence to members of the victims circle of friends or family), the threat to reveal sensitive information or secrets, or even the threat to accuse the victim of a crime. Extortion charges tend to be felony criminal offenses that carry a penalty of up to four years in a California State Prison, as well as fines of up to $10,000 if you are found guilty. Eventhough Roy's attempt at extortion is thought to have failed, even the attempt to extort another person is, in itself, a criminal offense that is punishable by jail or prison time, usually at least half the jail or prison term for being found guilty of actually committing the crime.
