13-Year-Old Harvard-Westlake Student Fatally Hit In An Alleged Hit-And-Run Accident In Los AngelesPosted on: March 9, 2010 at 4:13 a.m.A 13-year-old Harvard-Westlake student was struck by a driver in Los Angeles (Brentwood to be specific) at about 7:20 a.m. and later died at the hospital; investigators are calling the accident a hit-and-run. In this instance, authorities were searching for a male driver of a black or gray SLK Mercedes-Benz and perhaps that of one other vehicle in their investigation of a fatal hit-and-run accident that took the life of 13-year-old Julia Siegler who was on her way to school. According to authorities, the girl was crossing the intersection of Sunset Blvd. near Cliffwood Dr. against a red light when she was struck by the car. The girl’s mother apparently hit the hood of the Mercedes and screamed at the driver before he allegedly drove off. Authorities then confirmed that the driver of the Mercedes got out of the car and talked to the mother before allegedly fleeing the scene. A second car, a black Toyota, was behind the Mercedes, but it is unclear as to whether that car also struck the girl after the first car. The driver of the Toyota was with four passengers and they got out to talk to the mother, but they also left before authorities arrived at the scene. This unfortunate care isn’t a solitary one; pedestrians in Los Angeles are regularly injured or killed when one of the parties acts in a reckless manner. The mother of the child was not paying attention to her when she crossed the street while the light was red during rush hour traffic, and the driver of the Mercedes and perhaps the driver of the Toyota also acted recklessly by leaving the scene of the crime. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department say that a silver or gray 1990s Ford passenger van hit the bicyclist at about 8 a.m. near the intersection of South Dwight Avenue and West Compton Boulevard. The van was then seen fleeing east on Compton. The victim, whose name was not released, died of his injuries after rescuers attempted to treat him. Surveillance videos from a market across the street shows the driver pull over, get out of the vehicle and walk over to the victim, but then get back into his van and flee the scene. It also appears that the van was going at the speed limit and that the bicyclist might have ran the light at the corner, but the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has not yet determined who was at fault for the accident. A hit-and-run charge could mean serious trouble, regardless of whether you hit another car, someone’s property or a person. Los Angeles City and California State Law requires anyone involved in a traffic accident, regardless of fault, to stop immediately and exchange driver's licenses and insurance before leaving the scene. A hit-and-run charge could be either a misdemeanor or a felony. The deciding factor is the amount of property damage and the seriousness of injury.
