Violent crimes happen throughout the city of Los Angeles, from Beverly Hills and Malibu to North Hollywood and Panorama City. However, As any Los Angeles Criminal Defense Attorney will tell you, some areas are more serious than others. A man was recently shot by Los Angeles police officers after pointing a handgun at officers at an apartment building in Panorama City. In violent crimes where weapons are involved, police are often forced to fire upon people who may be confused or angry...or both. Any Defense Attorney will tell you that bringing a weapon into any situation is an absolute nightmare. The man was shot in his abdomen and was hospitalized. That day, it was the third police shooting that took place in Los Angeles, the other two happened in Watts.
Los Angeles has a long history of violent crimes, and Panorama City is known as a place where these crimes take place regularly. When you live in such an area, it is that much more important to avoid any weapons, because police will be on high alert when they know they are entering a situation in that city. For example, if the police are called into a domestic dispute in Beverly Hills, they are likely to approach the situation differently than if they were called into a domestic dispute in Watts or North Hollywood. This may not be fair, but when police are entering into any situation where a violent crime may occur, they have to prepare themselves for all possible scenarios.

Whenever you talk to a Los Angeles Criminal Lawyer about child pornography charges, you get the sense that even an accusation of child porn can ruin a person's life forever. If you hold a position of authority, a child porn accusation is even more severe. A Los Angeles Police Department officer whose son is serving time for possessing child pornography was sentenced to eight months behind bars recently for the same crime. In addition to the jail time, the officer must serve four months in home detention, pay thousands of dollars in fines and spend seven years in supervised release. One year ago, the officer's 29 year old son was standing in a Los Angeles federal court and was sentenced to eight years in prison. The father apparently had fewer images on his computer, but the judge in the case still wanted to send the man to prison because "the child is victimized again."
The officer was distinguished for a lifetime of exceptional service to the community in a very tough neighborhood, but the judge still sentenced the man to prison. The son was charged with receiving, possessing and distributing child pornography and the father was charged with receipt and possession of child pornography. The FBI executed the investigation, finding 600 images of child pornography on the son's computer after suspecting him of beign involved in criminal activity.

You may remember Antoine Dodson from his "hide ya kids, hide ya wife" screams when someone attempted to rape a tenant in his apartment complex. Now, however, Mr. Dodson is known for being arrested for marijuana possession and is in need of a Los Angeles Criminal Defense Attorney to represent him. Dodson was arrested in Alabama by Huntsville police at roughly 2:30 in the morning. He was booked on misdemeanor charges of possession of marijuana and released shortly there after. According to the jail's website, Dodson was hit with other misdemeanor charges, two of which were for failing to appear on a traffic charge and one was for failing to have insurance. He also has a speeding charge.
Dodson was made famous when he loudly called out an alleged attempted rapist in his community. He has since made numerous appearances on talk shows, including Tosh.0, and had many parody songs dedicated to himself and his outlandish "hide ya kids" rant. The celebrity may have contributed to his new found drug habit.
Marijuana possession may not seem like a serious thing, but as any Defense Attorney will tell you, any criminal case is a severe threat. This case may just have been a misdemeanor, but it could create problems if there are any future drug charges. In fact, even a misdemeanor could lead to jail time if the judge decides such action is warranted. Dodson is not the first celebrity in trouble this week. Nic Cage was arrested for potential domestic violence charges and ex-Destiny's Child singer Farrah Franklin was arrested for disturbing the peace in Los Angeles. The lawyer in these cases will work tirelessly to defend them, but people of all walks of life can find themselves facing severe legal troubles in criminal court.

In the 1950's, there were so many point shaving scandals in college basketball that countless careers were ruined by organized crime. Alleged mobsters would pay money to college players to either throw the game (meaning to lose it intentionally) or to "underperform" which would impact the odds. If a team is favored to win by 7 points, but they only win by 4, then anyone who took the odds would lose. When federal law enforcement agencies such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) got involved, young players had their dreams destroyed as they were either thrown out of college basketball, thrown in jail or both. An incident in San Diego demonstrates just how important it is to have a Los Angeles Federal Criminal Attorney today as it was 60 years ago.
At the University of San Diego, a point shaving investigation is shocking not only the community, but the sports scene in and around the city as well. Former USD basketball players Brandon Johnson and Brandon Dowdy are in desperate need of a Los Angeles Federal Criminal Attorney after they were indicted on charges of fixing college basketball games. The agents who were investigating the crime were originally looking into a marijuana drug ring for over a year. Investigators learned the dealers were also running sports books and allegedly bribing college players to fix games. Agents executed four search warrants at various residences and one business (a convenience store) in San Diego. By agents, this means FBI SWAT teams swarming into people's home and businesses, taking documents and people into custody. Without a skilled Federal Criminal Attorney working for you, there is no telling how law enforcement officials could take advantage of such a situation.
The investigation showed that the people allegedly involved in the bribing and point shaving operation bet on USD to lose against teams they were favored to beat. In a 7 game stretch, the team went 1-6, including 1-5-1 against the spread. These losses included three losses to teams they were favored against. The coach of the USD basketball is also allegedly involved in this operation. Each of these individuals will need a skilled, experienced Los Angeles Federal Criminal Attorney in order to get the best defense possible. If you or someone you know has been charged with a federal crime, contact the lawyers at Kestenbaum Eisner & Gorin, LLP by calling 877-781-1570 today!

Life in prison, life in prison without parole and the death penalty are all potential outcomes of any violent murder trial. A recent case in a Los Angeles Court highlights just how vital a Los Angeles White Collar Attorney is for anyone charged with a white collar crime. A woman from Canada is being sentenced for stealing thousands of millions of dollars from American citizens, all of them elderly, by using telemarketers to peddle fake credit card protection plans. The woman pleaded guilty in July, 2010 in Los Angeles Federal Court of conspiring to commit mail and wire fraud according to a US Attorney. Both the woman and her husband were arrested back in 2007 by Canadian officials as part of an investigation in that nation. The couple ran the scheme from 1998 until 2001, hiring telemarketers to sell fraudulent credit card protection programs to seniors in Los Angeles and throughout the United States. These telemarketers were hired to falsely tell victims that they were calling from a security division of Visa, MasterCard or the consumer's credit card issuing bank. They were sold fake credit card protection for roughly $300. These victims were coerced to divulge their card numbers for verification purposes, which enabled the two to immediately charged the fee to the victim's credit cards. The woman was charged and will be sentenced in Los Angeles, however her husband remains in Canada, facing charges in his home nation.
As you can see, even crimes that are a decade old can lead to years in prison. These people are facing federal charges, which are often more of a threat than state charges. Defending a violent crime in Los Angeles is one of the most difficult things a Los Angeles Criminal Defense Attorney will ever do, especially when the crime involves potential gang related activities. The City of Los Angeles has a particular set of laws that add years of prison time, fines and probation to the sentence of anyone who is affiliated with a gang. If a violent crime involves a gun, innocent bystanders, gang affiliation and prior convictions, it could lead to a life sentence or worse for anyone convicted of such a crime. This is why having a skilled Defense Attorney working for you is vital; he could mean the difference between spending twenty or more years in prison and being able to walk away with probation or less.
A recent case in the San Fernando Valley highlights just how important it is for a person to have a qualified lawyer. An ex-convict opened fire at a Granada Hills church carnival in May 2008 and wounded the mother of his son and two volunteers. He was convicted of two counts each of attempted murder and assault with a firearm, as well as one count of being a felon with a firearm. The man is a former member of the North Hollywood Boyz gang and was on parole at the time for assault with a deadly weapon. He walked into his son's school fundraiser at St. John Baptist de la Salle Church with a .22 caliber semiautomic rifle tucked into a tennis bag. He fired several rounds at his ex-girlfriend as she was setting up a carnival booth because he and the woman were involved in a custody dispute. The woman was hit in the elbow and a man was shot in the chest. Another person was hit in the leg. During the shooting, five parents, including an off-duty police officers, tackled and disarmed the man.
The man most likely did not hire a private Attorney, meaning he had a public defender representing him. The man had a history of domestic disputes with the ex-girlfriend and with officials at the church. The girl had gone so far as to get a restraining order against him from church property.
